Your Summer Sweat Rate Isn't Your Spring Sweat Rate

What actually happens to your sweat rate in summer
When you train consistently in heat, your body adapts. The technical term is heat acclimatisation, and it kicks in within 7–14 days of regular hot-weather exposure. The adaptations include earlier onset of sweating (you start sweating sooner), higher peak sweat rates, more dilute sweat (lower sodium per litre), and increased plasma volume.
The net effect: you produce significantly more sweat per hour than you did three months ago. Research shows increases of 20–40% in trained athletes after full heat acclimatisation.
That means a runner who lost 1.0L/hr in April might be losing 1.3–1.4L/hr by late July — without any change in pace or effort. If the hydration plan still targets 1.0L/hr intake, there's a growing deficit every single run.
Why this matters for your fall marathon
Here's the timing trap most runners fall into:
- April–May: Build a hydration plan during comfortable spring weather
- June–July: Train through summer, body heat-adapts, sweat rate climbs
- August–September: Start race-specific long runs using the spring plan
- Race day (October): Weather cools, but the plan was never updated for the higher fitness-driven sweat rate you now carry

The three signals your plan is outdated
You don't always need a formal sweat test to know something shifted. Watch for these:
1. Post-run weight loss is creeping up. If you used to lose 0.5kg on a 60-minute easy run and you're now losing 0.8–1.0kg at the same effort, your sweat rate has increased. Same pace, same distance, more fluid out.
2. Your urine colour after long runs is darker than it was in spring. Dark yellow to amber after a run where you followed your plan suggests the plan is under-dosing fluid.
3. You're salting your food more than usual. Craving salt is your body's blunt signal that sodium losses have outpaced intake. If you never used to reach for the salt shaker post-run and now you do, your electrolyte targets need revisiting.
How to recalculate: the manual approach
The simplest sweat rate test takes 60 minutes:
- Weigh yourself naked before a run (in kg or lbs)
- Run at your typical training pace for 60 minutes
- Don't drink anything during the run
- Weigh yourself naked immediately after
- The difference in body weight (in kg) equals your sweat rate in litres per hour
Do this on a day that's representative of your current training conditions — mid-summer heat, typical humidity, your normal time of day. And do it again if conditions change by more than 5°C or 10°F.
The limitation: this gives you fluid volume lost but not sodium concentration. That matters because heat acclimatisation makes sweat more dilute — you're losing more fluid but slightly less sodium per litre. Getting both numbers right is the difference between a plan that hydrates and a plan that actually prevents cramping.
Why once isn't enough
If you recalculated in July, that number is valid for July conditions. But your race might be in October. You'll need to test again in September when temperatures drop, because your body will partially de-acclimatise within 2–3 weeks of cooler weather.
This is the cycle that trips athletes up:
- Test in spring → plan works in spring
- Don't retest in summer → plan fails in summer
- Retest in late summer → plan works for summer long runs
- Don't retest in autumn → plan overshoots once temperatures drop
